SKIN SCHOOLS WITH HAILEY BIEBER: 10 TIPS

SKIN SCHOOLS WITH HAILEY BIEBER: 10 TIPS

By DR. BARBARA STURM

7th Oct 2020

Hailey Bieber has joined Dr. Barbara Sturm’s educational platform Skin School twice; first on YouTube then on TikTok. Hailey is a knowledgeable skincare and ingredient science devotee and together with Dr. Sturm they continue to share their skincare and lifestyle views, approaches, and experiences with a particular focus on the skin concerns and fixes for teenagers and young adults. Here’s ten things we’ve learned so far:

1. The skin barrier is our skin’s protection tool & secret to skin health.

“When our skin gets dry our skin barrier function gets really weak and that’s a problem,” said Dr. Sturm. “The skin barrier is really the fortress of the skin; it’s like a protection tool for the entire body, so we need to really make sure it’s functioning and intact…if its not, bacteria and allergens can come in which can cause breakouts, dysfunctions and irritation.”

2. Inflammation causes most skin problems.

Dr. Sturm explained that 90% of what we do to care for our skin should come down to reducing inflammation. Inflammation triggers are all around us — our diet, stress and sleep habits, pollution, sun exposure, HEV light from phones, and even harsh skincare ingredients, and can lead to everything from redness and irritation, to chronic skin conditions such as rosacea and acne.

3. A simple skincare routine is best

Hailey discussed her no-fuss daily routine which focuses on saving time while covering all the bases of essential skincare. Morning and night she cleanses her face and follows with a serum and moisturizer. And if she has extra time at night, she’ll apply a face mask and/or extra moisturizer to treat skin to more intense hydration.

4. No matter what, cleanse your skin

Bieber stressed the fact that she washes her face before bed - no matter what - as sleeping with makeup on can trap dirt, oil and pollution against the skin, leading to acne breakouts. “I think staying on your regimen is so important,” she explained. “You can’t get lazy and be like for two days I’m going to stick to this and then for three days I don’t feel like doing it.”

5. Acne-prone skin requires gentle exfoliation

Dr. Sturm explained that if you are prone to oily skin and blackheads, you need to exfoliate 2-3 times a week to remove dead skin cells because this is what oxidizes with excess sebum to cause blackheads and whiteheads. But it’s important to use a gentle exfoliant, such as the ENZYME CLEANSER, which employs enzymes to break down dead skin cells, lipids and proteins and sweep them away.

6. The importance of sleep for great skin

Sleep and rest are super important for skin health. When we sleep, our skin goes into repair and renew mode, reducing levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. Bieber said, “Get some sleep. Sleep and rest are so important for our overall health. If I don’t sleep and I’m traveling a lot, that’s when I start to see that I get broken out or really dry.”

7. Know your skincare ingredients

Bieber explained that because she has Perioral Dermatitis - an inflammatory skin rash - she makes sure she knows exactly what ingredients go into her skincare. Hailey recommends reading about brands, products, and ingredients on an online database that rates their safety. “I think it’s really important to know what’s going into your skin and what your skin is going to be absorbing,” she advised.

8. Sun is the biggest enemy

The sun causes 80-90% of the visible signs of aging so adequate protection all year round is essential. Bieber said, “I don’t leave the house without wearing sunscreen, I even wear a little bit inside…because if the sun can see you, it can see your skin.” Dr. Sturm advised choosing a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects from both UVA and UVB rays with at least an SPF 30.

9. Essential advice for wearing a face mask

Bieber and Dr. Sturm discussed the complexities of wearing face coverings and the actions you can take to prevent irritation. “If I could suggest anything I would say as soon as you get home, clean your face after wearing your mask,” advised Bieber. Dr. Sturm also recommended taking a set of skincare to work with you to cleanse your skin when you have a break and to always keep your mask clean.

10. Fragrance has no place in skincare

Fragrances in skincare products are one of the most common skin irritants, causing sensitization and other skin dysfunctions and should always be avoided. Fragranced products can really harm your skin barrier function because it harms the microbiome – which has to be perfectly in shape in order for the skin to function,” explained Dr. Sturm.
